Why having someone in your company will help drive the success in marketing your small business

From our experience, if your internal team is leading the marketing drive, then they’re certainly more entrenched in the business as they feel like they're adding value and they're taking their role more personally. By having your marketing being led by your team, we know it gives an extra boost to your business and your marketing.

The first step you need to take to ensure you’re a marketing led company is to understand why and how you're different to the competition. What you don't want to do is start executing your marketing activity, like building a website or running Google AdWords or sending out flyers to the local area when you don't really know why you're different to the competition. What’s the message on those flyers that makes you stand out? How many flyers are in my letterbox or Google AdWords campaigns do I see online? Why are you different

You want to ensure you don’t waste valuable resources like your team’s time or bucket loads of cash on activity that's not targeted, engaging people, or telling people why you are different to the competition. Once you do discover your point of difference, make sure that you're communicating it consistently across all your marketing.

Marketing your business starts from within. The true essence of being a marketing led business means that everyone is rowing in the same direction. Everyone knows what your positioning is, and they can yell it from the rooftops.

Whether it’s them talking to someone on the bus about where they work, when they answer the phone in the office or with family and friends at a Sunday afternoon BBQ, we need to make sure that everyone in the team is being consistent in what your business and brand stands for.

It's making sure they have an easy explanation when someone asks them “how’s work” or” “what do you do for work?” whether it's in their friends their family the person being on the phone person having coffee with, everyone knows your business and they work in your business so give them an easy way to talk about your business.

To bring it all together, you can even look at having weekly or monthly meetings to see how everyone's feeling about marketing to ensure they’re all engaged and to constantly get feedback from within about what’s working and what isn’t. It makes it all that much more enjoyable when the team have constant buy-in and a whole lot more rewarding for all involved.
