Is Your Marketing Actually Discoverable?

Is Your Marketing Actually Discoverable?

This episode explores what it really means for your marketing to be “discoverable” and why so many small businesses miss this critical piece. Discoverability is about whether people can actually find your business when they search online, including on Google, social media, and other digital platforms. We break down SEO, Google Ads, and consistency on social media in simple, practical terms so you can understand how visibility really works—and how to improve it.

Episode Overview

In this episode of the Little Marketing Podcast, we unpack one of the most overlooked parts of small business marketing: discoverability.

You might be posting on social media, running ads, or updating your website—but if people can’t actually find you when they’re searching for your service, your marketing is missing a key piece of the puzzle.

We break down how discoverability works across Google, SEO, Google Ads, and social media, and why consistency is often the difference between being seen and being invisible.

What Does “Discoverable” Mean in Marketing?

Discoverable marketing simply means your business can be easily found online when someone is actively looking for your product or service. This includes platforms like:

  • Google search
  • Your website
  • Social media platforms
  • YouTube and other content platforms

For example, if someone searches “landscaper Sydney,” a discoverable business would appear in those results.

If you’re not showing up, you’re essentially invisible to people who are already looking for what you offer.

SEO vs Google Ads

Search visibility comes down to two main strategies: SEO and Google Ads.

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)

SEO is about helping Google understand:

  • What your business does
  • Where you are located
  • Who you help
  • When done well, SEO helps your business appear in organic search results like “landscaper Sydney”.

However, SEO is a long-term strategy. It takes time to build authority and rankings.

Google Ads

Google Ads allows you to pay to appear at the top of search results immediately.

You can target specific searches like “plumber near me” or “landscaper Sydney” and show up instantly—but you pay per click. The Balance:

  • SEO = long-term visibility that builds over time
  • Google Ads = immediate visibility, but ongoing cost
  • Most small businesses benefit from a combination of both.

Discoverability on Social Media

Social media discoverability is driven by algorithms.

When someone engages with your content, platforms like Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok learn what they like and show them more of your content over time.

But this only works if you stay active and consistent.

If you post irregularly, the algorithm has less data—and your audience is less likely to see you.

Why Consistency Drives Visibility

Consistency is one of the most important factors in discoverability.

When you show up regularly, you increase the number of times people see your business:

  • First impression
  • Second reminder
  • Third touchpoint

And most customers don’t buy the first time they see you—they need multiple touchpoints.

If you disappear for weeks at a time, you lose those opportunities.

A Quick Reality Check

Ask yourself: If someone searched for your service right now…

Would they find you?  Or would they find your competitor instead?

Often, it’s not about who is better, it’s about who is easier to find.

What Consistency Actually Looks Like

Consistency doesn’t mean posting every day or overcomplicating your marketing.

It means choosing a sustainable rhythm, such as:

  • 1–2 social media posts per week
  • Regular website updates
  • Ongoing Google Ads campaigns
  • A monthly email newsletter

The key is sustainability, marketing only works if you can maintain it.

Making Your Marketing Work Harder

Every piece of marketing should have a clear purpose:

  • Can people find you through it?
  • Does it explain what you do clearly?
  • Does it keep your business top of mind?

If not, it may not be doing enough heavy lifting for your business.

Discoverability isn’t just about being visible, it’s about being visible to the right people at the right time.

Key Takeaways

  • Discoverability means being easy to find when people search for your service
  • SEO builds long-term visibility, while Google Ads provides instant visibility
  • Social media algorithms reward consistency and engagement
  • Customers need multiple touchpoints before they buy
  • Inconsistency leads to lost opportunities and reduced visibility
  • Marketing should always have a clear purpose tied to visibility or awareness
  • Being easy to find often matters more than being “the best”

Discoverability is one of the most important foundations of small business marketing. If people can’t find you, even the best marketing strategy won’t deliver results.

Start small, stay consistent, and focus on making your business easier to find across Google, social media and your website.
