Why Your Marketing Isn't Actually the Problem

When business gets quiet, it’s easy to assume you need more marketing. But before posting more often, running Google Ads or redesigning your website, there’s a more important question to ask: is marketing actually the problem?

In the newest epsiode of the Little Marketing podcast, Freya explores why diagnosing the real business problem should come before deciding on the marketing solution.

Marketing can’t fix the wrong problem. If your business is already attracting enquiries but losing them afterwards, generating even more enquiries may not solve anything. The real issue could sit within your positioning, offer, sales process, customer experience or follow-up — which is why understanding the problem needs to come before choosing the tactic.

Why marketing gets blamed when business slows down

Marketing is one of the most visible parts of a business.

When things get quiet, it’s easy to look at your website, social media, advertising or branding and assume something needs to change. Posting more, refreshing the website or launching a new campaign can feel like progress.

But activity and progress aren’t necessarily the same thing.

If marketing wasn’t the problem in the first place, investing more time and money into it may simply create more activity without addressing what’s actually holding the business back.

What if you already have enough enquiries?

Imagine your business says, “We need more customers.”

The obvious response might be to generate more leads. But what if the business is already receiving plenty of enquiries?

Suddenly, the problem looks very different.

Potential customers might be waiting days for a response. They could be receiving a confusing quote, struggling to understand what happens next or simply not seeing why they should choose your business over someone else.

In that situation, more marketing could send even more people into a process that is already losing customers.

What you’ll learn in this episode

  • Why marketing often gets blamed for problems it didn’t create

  • How to question whether marketing is really holding your business back

  • Why more leads don’t automatically mean more customers

  • How positioning, sales, follow-up and customer experience can affect results

  • Why diagnosing the problem should come before choosing a marketing tactic

  • How Little Marketing’s consultative approach changes the conversation

Start with the problem, not the tactic

One of Freya’s biggest observations since joining Little Marketing has been what happens before the team recommends any marketing activity.

Rather than immediately suggesting social media, advertising or a new website, the conversation starts with questions.

Where are your enquiries coming from? What happens after someone contacts you? Why do customers choose you? Where are potential customers dropping off?

Those questions help build a clearer picture of what’s happening across the business before deciding what needs to change.

A question to ask in your own business

The next time your first instinct is, “We need more marketing,” ask yourself:

What evidence do we have that marketing is actually the problem?

Are enquiries down, or are conversions down? Are people struggling to find the business, or are they finding you and leaving confused? Are you attracting the wrong customers, or attracting the right ones and losing them afterwards?

Even ten minutes spent thinking through those questions could change what you decide to do next.

Need help working out what’s actually holding your business back?

For 18 years, Little Marketing has worked with Australian small businesses to bring greater clarity and strategy to their marketing. Sometimes the answer is more marketing. Sometimes it isn’t. The important part is understanding the problem before investing in the solution. Contact us today to start the conversation!
