Customers rarely know which business is objectively the best. Instead, they often choose the business that gives them enough certainty to feel confident they’re making the right decision.
In Episode 2 of the Little Marketing podcast, Freya explores why building customer certainty can be just as important as getting their attention, and how small interactions throughout your marketing can influence whether someone chooses your business or keeps looking.
Direct summary
Customers aren’t always looking for proof that you’re the best. They’re looking for enough reasons to feel confident choosing you.
Your website, reviews, response times, testimonials, communication and the way you explain your process all provide small signals that either build certainty or create doubt. The easier you make it for someone to understand your business and what happens next, the easier you make it for them to take the next step.
When someone chooses a builder, accountant, physio, café or any other business, they usually have no way of knowing which option is objectively the best.
They make the best decision they can with the information available to them.
They might read reviews, visit your website, look at examples of your work, ask someone they trust or send an enquiry and see how quickly you respond.
Individually, these interactions may seem small. Together, they help answer an important question:
“Can I trust these people?”
That’s where certainty becomes an important part of marketing.
At Little Marketing, Certainty is the first of our 3 C’s: Certainty, Control and Convenience.
Certainty isn’t about convincing customers that your business is perfect. It’s about reducing unnecessary doubt.
If someone visits your website and doesn’t understand what you do, uncertainty increases.
If they enquire and have no idea when they’ll hear back, uncertainty increases.
If your website clearly explains your service, your reviews are current and your communication tells customers exactly what happens next, you begin removing those doubts.
Every interaction can make someone feel either more or less confident about choosing your business.
A referral can remove a significant amount of uncertainty before someone has even contacted your business.
When a trusted friend or colleague recommends a business, potential customers often don’t feel the same need to research every alternative. Someone they trust has already given them a reason to feel confident.
That raises an important marketing question:
How can you create a similar feeling for someone who hasn’t been referred?
Your reviews, testimonials, website, examples of your work, response times and communication can all help a complete stranger build confidence in your business.
Great marketing can help create some of the certainty that naturally comes with a referral.

Open your website and try to forget everything you already know about your business.
Imagine you’ve found it for the first time and ask yourself:
Your potential customer shouldn’t have to work hard to understand your offer.
Clear positioning can give people another reason to feel confident about their decision.
Something as simple as “We’ve received your enquiry and will call you within one business day” can immediately remove an unanswered question.
Customers aren’t necessarily looking for perfection. They’re looking for enough certainty to feel comfortable taking the next step.
