Positive small business owner energy is infectious

If you’re a business owner and you’re excited about the quarter of a percent interest rate drop then you’ve probably got your priorities the wrong way around.

There was such a focus on the upcoming election about the interest rate decision that the RBA made and then on the back of that you hear so many sob stories of small business owners complaining that they need more of a cut in their rate.

Whether it’s a business loan or their properties or whatever it may be, if you’re worried about $100 a month as a business owner, then potentially your focus is on the wrong things.

What about driving your business? What about looking at your profit margin? What about driving revenue? What about marketing your business? What about speaking to an accountant? What about looking at the formula of how you make money within your business? What about your customer experience?

There are so many things that you could be paying attention to apart from the quarter of a percentage drop in your interest rate. The media loves feeding this negativity, but as a business owner you should be ignoring the news, be focusing on your business.

Ignore the negativity the media wants to feed us and just focus on what’s important for you, your business and your life.

Building your small business brand with video

Should I be posting videos on social media? This is a question I got early this morning from a client of ours that has been in business for over 30 years.

My answer was to absolutely be posting videos, but his concern was the type of videos that he should be posting. The one main suggestion that I gave to him was that given his business has been going for 30 years in the services industry, the perception that he’s creating from these videos needs to match his history of professionalism and who he works with.

I said to try and avoid making these videos trivial, you want to reinforce your professionalism, your trust, the type of clients that you work with like strata, government and councils. They’re the type of clients that are going to be looking at your content, so make it relevant to them. Speak to the fact that you’re a leader in your field, you’re not a one man band, you didn’t start yesterday, so that over time as people start to see your content, it’s aligned with your history, how you position your business and your brand in the minds of those customers, so there’s consistency in that message and the perception that you’re trying to create in the marketplace.

They were the considerations I gave him, to think about before he posts.

Activity is key and it’s not going to be perfect, as I always say, from day one it will evolve but it’s actually starting and the fact that he’s keen to do it is exciting for him and his business. He just needs to start, so I guess the key advice is think about what message you want to put our there and if you’re posting videos, what are you trying to portray and what perception are you trying to stand for?
