Make your Australian small business marketing stand out by being an expert

Understanding the competition allows you to think about how you can position your business and your brand in the minds of your customers that is different to the competition. So, what are the four things that you need to consider when you think about the competition?
1. What is their product or service offering and what can you do that’s better than them. What can you do that’s different to them and how can you focus in on a service or product offering that is different to them.
2. Really focus on a type of audience that you can be an expert and communicate to so they know exactly what you’re doing and how you can help them.
3. Focus in on a city, suburb, region, location, state or country and really be the best at that to that particular area.
4. Can you be an expert or a specialist across those three factors and really communicate and position yourself as an expert and a leader in what you do.
As humans we want to deal with leaders in our field and experts in our field. I always talk about the medical industry and how focused they are from a specialist perspective. So understand the competition and think about how you can be a specialist in what you do.

ONE KEY FACTOR to build long term success for your small business

What does marketing success look like? I spoke to one of our clients recently, we’ve been working closely for 3-4 years in a consultative approach. It’s great to see that the success they’re having today has been created over the last 3-4 years and it’s all about consistency in their marketing. First year a bit of growth, second year more growth, third year more growth and fourth year breakout year with the most inquiries they’ve ever had. They’re a service-based business showing off the work that they can do in a visual perspective on their website, through socials and it’s just about activity. Did they start off perfect? No. But they’ve created momentum and activity, they do it regularly and it’s about consistency in the frequency of their activity and consistency in the message of what they do and why they’re different. So when I hear those success stories, it rings true to why consistency is so important. Businesses are not built overnight and it’s all about creating sustainable success over a long period of time. So keep focused on your marketing, create consistency in in what you’re doing with the ultimate goal of success in your small business.

Say NO more often to customers & clients

There are so many scenarios whether it’s in a service or product based industry where the customers are just painful or it’s just not the right fit or just doesn’t suit your business model – it’s ok to say no and be honest with a client or customer to tell them why it is that you can’t help them and why you think it’s not a good fit. If you try to help them and then can’t, you’re going to end up paying for it on the other side. They’re going to be wondering why you didn’t help them when you truly knew from the very beginning that they were painful and that you weren’t actually going to help them. Inherently as a business owner, you want to help everybody that’s more than likely you started your business in the first place but it’s ok to not be able to help everybody and it’s ok to say that magic word of NO. That empowering feeling is incredible.
