Big companies having creative and subliminal ads is great but as a small business owner you don’t have the marketing budget let alone the time, resources or energy a Coke or Disney ad. So put whatever limited resources you have into figuring out what you do and why you’re different. Why am I going to choose you over the competition? Be really obvious about why you’re different to them. On your website, explain who your audience is, explain why your offering is different, explain why you have some leadership. If we’re going to compare two websites, one website that talks about what they do, why they’re different and who they do it for and the other one is just vague, and they do everything for everybody… then it’s obvious to know who you’re going to choose. The one that’s super obvious about what they do and why they’re different. So forget all of the subliminal marketing messages and all of the clever stuff the big brands are doing. Focus on your small business and how you can drive profit.

I just did a Google search for marketing courses specifically built for small business owners. Let me tell you that there’s so much junk out there, it’s incredible. There are so courses out there that are built specifically for a small business owner to look at how they can differentiate their brand and their business in the minds of their customers that is different to the competition. A course that will create a tailored, actionable and focused marketing plan. All these colleges and online courses that are out there are so generic. They’re not built with the mindset of a small business owner and the challenges that they face from a time, money, energy perspective. I think one thing we’ve seen with small business owners over the last 17 years is that marketing is quite overwhelming and they’re not really sure where to start, what they should do first, what it really means and what the tangible benefits are for their business. Often its related back to objectives and what they want to achieve as a business owner and thinking about why they started the business, what do they want the business to achieve for them, is there an income or a profit related to their objectives, what’s their end goal, is there an exit plan, so it’s thinking about a lot of those things. In the process we go through in working with our clients, we talk a lot about their goals and objectives because it’s really about understanding our clients and what they want to achieve out of their business. There are so many ways to go from a marketing approach, but the fundamentals of marketing don’t change but it’s the approach that we can take for our small business clients to just make sure that we are getting them on the right path to what they want to achieve.
