The importance of standing out from the competition in marketing for small business, what positioning is and finding your points of difference.

In this article, let’s briefly discuss the importance of standing out from the competition, what positioning is and finding your points of difference.

To differentiate your product or service just on the quality of your customer service is often difficult until people experience it themselves. So, we need to find a different way to stand out from the competition.

In the over communicated society that we live in, what space of the mind does your service or product own in the minds of its customers? Why would someone come to you if you’re just like everyone else? What makes you special? Different? Are you an expert?

I reference the medical industry plenty in our articles and podcasts because they’re so good at marketing, and it’s all by accident. They have so many specialties, and when we’re in need of an expert, our GP doesn’t help us, our specialists do.

According to the Australian institute of Health and welfare, as of 2015, there are over 80 specialties that a medical professional can focus on. Now that’s some focus and specialisation.

By finding your point of difference, this will allow you to position your business in the minds of your clients where there’s the least amount of competition.

Marketing is what will make you stand apart from the competition, help people come through your doors and in turn drive revenue.

You can have the best small business out there, but if the competition is plenty, you don’t position yourself differently to them and get your name out into the world, you actually don’t have a business at all.
