Small business marketing consultant in Sydney - applying Maslow’s hierarchy of needs in your marketing strategy

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a pretty simple yet useful theory that small businesses in Sydney can take into consideration when developing marketing plans. Read on to find out more about this theory!

What does Maslow theory tells us? It explains the fundamentals of human behaviour by understanding different levels of needs.

Starting from physiological needs, (the base of the pyramid that forms Maslow’s hierarchy of needs), it includes basic needs for survival like food, water, shelter and clothes etc. If your product is able to provide some sort of such basic needs, do bring to attention to your consumers.

Moving up to the second level of need, we have safety. It refers to security, comfort, employment, health and so on. Compared to physiological needs, they are not as essential for survival but still important. A lot of insurance companies based their marketing on this level of need as the main benefit of their products is provide safety and security.

From the third level onwards, the needs are based more on psychological aspects. We have sense of belongingness after safety needs. There is where love, friends and families come into place. It is about being in a social group. In this case, interaction and engagements with your small business in Sydney is crucial. For instance, a potential marketing effort could be holding a social media contest and the winner gets a prize.

Self-esteem involves recognitions and rewards. Does your small business have a loyalty program? It is time to do something to make your customers feel special.

Self-actualisation is the highest level of needs and it is not easy to meet. A good example will be Doritos, who ran a competition to drive customers’ creativity to “create your own ad”. Self-actualisation is achieved when the winner’s ad gets broadcast over TV and the Internet.

Make sure you apply this theory to your small business marketing campaigns as it helps you get into the minds of your customers. Do not hesitate to contact Little Marketing – your small business marketing consultant!
