Marketing and advertising isn’t the same thing

Many people use the word “marketing” and “advertising” interchangeably but they are two different thing. Let’s explore the two marketing terms.

What is marketing?

Marketing is a process that involves planning, implementing and controlling of activities intended to “build bridge” so as to bring buyers as well as sellers together to make transactions. Even before the planning stage, understanding the market is the most important part as it guides the rest of the process. Marketing is what defines a brand and attract the market share.

What is advertising?

Advertising is something that is paid, public and a non-personal announcement of a persuasive message by an identified sponsor. It is to tell the market what your business has got to offer. Advertising is a part of marketing and involves developing strategies such as the ad placement, frequency, etc. Examples of mediums for ad placements are newspaper, television, radio, mail, billboards and Internet. Advertising is usually the most expensive component before public relations and market research.

In a nutshell, advertising is a slice of pizza from a whole. Others slices are marketing research, media planning, public relations, pricing, distribution etc. All these “slices” have to work together to form a whole pizza. They are all interrelated and must work together to achieve a bigger goal, especially for small businesses in Sydney and Melbourne.
